English Aims:
At Churchtown Primary School, we recognise that reading and writing are inexplicably linked. We aim to give all pupils the opportunity to access quality and challenging texts to develop a child's understanding of vocabulary, audience and purpose, whilst promoting a love of both reading and writing. Our curriculum also provides pupils with a range of oracy opportunities, supporting them to develop key communication skills and allowing them to 'learn through talk'.
Following the National Curriculum, we aim to ensure that all pupils:
- are confident readers who can read fluently and can understand what they read
- read widely & regularly, and can discuss what they are reading and share recommendations with others
- develop and acquire an extensive vocabulary, being able to apply this knowledge in all forms (reading, writing and speaking)
- understand and appreciate the rich & varied literacy heritage of our local and national context
- are able to write clearly, accurately and coherently, adapting their language and style for a range of contexts, purposes and audiences
- use talk and discussion to support their learning, being able to elaborate and explain their ideas & understanding
- are competent communicators, demonstrating this in a variety of ways (through presentations discussions, debate etc.)
